Country Animals
If you are going to live in the country, you must have some country animals. They teach us lessons and give us enjoyment in their being. These gentle creatures provide a good and different kind of companionship for children and their care helps teach responsibility. Fresh meat for the freezer. Fresh eggs for the kitchen. It is nice to know where your food comes from. We have had many animals on our country properties and were constantly experimenting with new kinds. During my 58 years of country living we have had experiences with the following:
- Horses
- Mules
- Donkeys
- Cattle
- Sheep
- Pigs
- Chickens
- Geese
- Goats
Not to mention the pheasants, wild turkeys, and owls. This made for exciting living...
Raising Sheep
I knew nothing about raising sheep, but I was soon to learn for my husband purchased 35 pregnant ewes and had to leave for a 2 week business trip!
Raising Pigs
My education about raising pigs started with The Lone Ranger. This little pig could escape from any pig pen, no matter what we did to keep him in. He just loved to explore the neighboring farms.
Horse Stories in the Country
My four boys were in the habit of listening to the horse stories included in the adventures of The Lone Ranger,Red Ryder and Sargeant Preston on the radio. So when we moved to the country, they were ready for their own horses.
Raising Chickens
Our first country house had a chicken coop all ready for raising chickens. Naturally the first thing I did was order baby chicks. They arrived by mail!
Hereford Beef Cattle
Big Foot Primrose was the name of one of the three pregnant registered cows my husband bought when he decided that we should raise Hereford beef cattle for our own use.
Dog Stories
Most people who live in the country have a number of dog stories, for country living is just not complete without a dog, or two, or three...
